REPUBLIC OF MADAGASCAR
Madagascar lies in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, east of Mozambique. It is approximately 1580km long and 570km wide. Madagascar has a population of 18.6 million with 44% of that being under the age of 14. The average age is 17 and the average life expectancy is 57. Half of the population lives below the poverty line and the infant mortality rate is 75 per 1000 births (compared to Australia's 5 per 1000 births). Hepatitis A, typhoid fever and malaria are the country's biggest health problems. Madagascar has received $354 million in international aid but currently has $4.6 billion in foreign debt.
