Why Rift Valley Academy?

Just as the chapter heading of the book, "School in the Clouds" written about RVA, starts off by asking the question, "Why Rift Valley Academy?" I would like to share the importance of Christian Education and a missionary school.

Charles Hurlburt the founder of Rift Valley Academy was adamant that the missionary children in his family and those on his team (the second wave of AIM missionaries in the early 1900s) needed a teacher who was capable of providing a good education, so he started Rift Valley Academy shortly after arriving in Kijabe, Kenya.  Charles Hurlburt didn't just believe in a good education he saw RVA as a way to disciple all sorts of students with a Biblical worldview and so he included both missionary students and national students in the school.  It is wonderful to see that RVA was always a school for both missionaries and nationals pointing to Christ (p 22).

Today RVA hosts students for 30 different countries with 49 families working to share the gospel in 30 different African countries through 80 different missions organizations.

So, just as Hurlburt saw the very thing he hoped for, students coming to Christ as a result of the Christian education they received, we continue to see the Biblical teaching at RVA change the lives of the students in attendance.  I can't help but point to the verse, "train up a child in the way he should go and when he is over He will not depart from it" (Prov. 1:22).  Hurlburt had a vision for using education to point students to Christ and he proved his desired outcome as generations of students who have come through RVA have come to Christ, remained in Him, and have gone to tell others of their Savior.

So, "Why Rift Valley Academy?" because it is one way God is using to point people to Christ.  Thanks for joining in!
