6 Bits from the First Week of School
As we start the first week of school at RVA we find ourselves kneeing in prayer.
We pray for kids who have to leave their families to come to school here. The MKs have to travel from all over Africa on Saturday, rest and settle in on Sunday, and start a full week of school come Monday. Needless to say, they were tired and emotional before the first day of school was over. And so, we prayed for comfort.
As we met for prayer as a Staff we quickly remembered the graduated seniors praying they would find good friends and connections in a new country. We prayed for them to remember God's love during such a big transition.
With only three weeks till Titchie (elementary) Sunday I have already had 3 practices with the 6th graders. I love the moments before we even sing when we can talk about what it means to lead others in worship. These kids blow me away as they talk about the importance of honoring God with their voices and hearts.
As a Junior High teacher my heart goes out to the new 7th graders as they try to navigate a different teacher for each class in different rooms and buildings, having come from the world of elementary school the year before. By Wednesday I wasn't surprised when I found myself giving a big hug and pep talk to one of the 7th graders reminding her not to be too hard on herself. I was so glad God put me in her path for just such a moment.
A new year also means a new choir and each new student brings the trepidation of singing around others while hoping to succeed and catch on quickly. With tons of encouragement we were able to come together to sing the National Anthem for the first Flag Raising Chapel. What a special moment to present this year's choir before the school. Already I have been impressed with the kind hearts of this year's group.
As I found myself with the 8th grade class on Friday night enjoying our first class party of the new year, I was amazed that the returning students already knew the names of the new students and where bring them in any chance they could. These are special kids, for just as we teach them about living in community with God they teach us about what community looks like because of our great Father.
Thank you Lord, for a place where You are at work. May be praise You in the good and hold onto You in the hard as we point each other to Your throne each day.
