Hell's Gate

It was an honor to join the 7th grade class as one of the chaperones for their trip to Hell's Gate.  Having taught the kids as 6th graders last year and now as 7th graders I was excited to join them on an activity outside of school.

The 32 students were split into three groups.  Each group rotated through three stations - rock climbing, rappelling, and hiking the Gorge. Since I've only climbed a few times I thought I would leave that to the other capable RVA staff, and so I help with the hike.

I loved hanging with the kids while one of the other teachers taught about the formation of the walls made from the volcanic ash after the past irruptions of the neighboring volcanoes and the geothermal water running throughout the canyon.

It was fascinating to hike through an area that has been featured in several movies including the second "Tomb Raider."

In some places the water was so hot it was steaming.  Kenyan has already started harvesting some of the energy from these hot springs and converting it into electricity.

I can't pass up taking a picture of a bug I've never seen before!
I'm told they are called water scorpions.

There is something special about being out in God's amazing creation.  The kids will never forget this experience and the I'm so glad I got to join them in the awe and wonder.
