RVA Newsletter
RVA has started sending out a newsletter to the parents of the students we serve. This one included a note about the choir tour. The current discussion topics at the end are rather intense, but I left them because I know it will lead you to prayer for what the students here are dealing with.
March News: A monthly insight into life at Rift Valley Academy
The rains have come to Kijabe and it has been a record breaking March in this regard. All of our students now understand why RVA is sometimes called “The School in the Clouds”. March started out with Choir Tour. Our high school choir was able to preform at several schools in and around the Nairobi area. Their concert was then preformed for the RVA community at our RVA Band/Choir concert the following weekend. We love to see our students’ many talents on display! We were also able to witness our students’ talents on the field, in the gym, and in competition during basketball, field hockey, football, and the Robotics finals. From junior high to high school we experienced success in the final scores but more then that it was wonderful to see our teams’ character and witness for the Lord shining brightly. On tournament days we all enjoy Senior Store food. The last Store of term 2 is when the Junior class shadows the Senior class and learns how to run a successful store. We are all looking forward to enjoying what the Junior Class has to offer to next term! During March we had two Variety Nights. Variety Nights are an opportunity for our staff to offer a wide variety of activities to our students & to participate with them in the activity - from sports, to crafts, to visiting around a campfire, to board games, etc. It is fun to enjoy a small group of students while participating in a common interest. The end of term 2 was full of activity. The Titchie band put on a great concert of their own. There is of course dorm clean up responsibilities for all of our boarding students, projects are due, and tests are given. I’m sure your children came home ready for a break! Our juniors and seniors were all gone for one week on their various Interim trips. Once again, we are thankful to the Lord for safety in travel and the amazing learning experience that Interim is. Our students develop new friendships, share the Lord, learn about different cultures, and are challenged to grow in new and exciting ways. It is always a delight to us to hear how much people enjoy our students when they are on these trips. What a blessing your children are to us!
Current Discussion Topics >>>
#1 – The focus of RVA Sunday sermons this school year is the book of 1 Peter. Many of our students have been discussing the concept of “submission” and what that means for us as believers. This would be a great topic to discuss with your child this April break. #2 – Our counseling department wanted to make you aware of a current world issue that they are seeing impact our students as well. Teen depression and suicide are on the rise and there is often times a link to technology use and social media. Here is a link to an article to read and get the discussion going with your children. “Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones.” The Atlantic https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/arc hive/2017==/09/has-the-smartphonedestroyed-a-generation/534198/
