Choir Devo-Blessing

The RVA choir has the privilege of staying though Graduation to sing for the ceremony.  It really is an honor, because "leave day" is the day before and the rest of the students go home, so the choir are the only students that are not family members of the graduates that get to stay and see the seniors graduate.  You can image this is also because of limited seating.  In any case, it really is special that choir gets to be part of this important ceremony.

Three of the four songs we do for grad are sung every year.  "Africa" by Togo with an arrangement done by a former RVA grad.  "Mayibuye" a South African song which translates, "Come Back Africa." And the last song we have done for the last few years is "Blessing."  The seniors also pick a benediction song for the choir to sing as a blessing over the graduates.  More on that in another post.

Last year, I had 16 seniors in choir.  I asked many of them to conduct for their own ceremony.  I felt it was a good way to reflect the culmination of their abilities and time at RVA.  So, this year I asked the same of this years seniors in choir.  Amazingly, they asked me to conduct one song - "Blessing."

The song was written by an Irish college student Katie Meran Bart for her graduation.  The words come from an Irish prayer and are very fitting of the title as they reflect a prayer of sending.

My favorite line reads," May God hold you in the palm of His hand."
