Holy Week for 33 year olds
I always get excited about Palm Sunday. I love seeing the little kids wave palm branches as we worship Jesus together. I love seeing the Easter lilies and smelling their beautiful fragrance as we pour out praise to our Lord and Savior.
A few years ago I realized that I was born on Palm Sunday. I don't know why I didn't realize this before, but my love for the special day in the year grew knowing I was born onto such an important day in history - a day of praise before a day of sorrow leading to a day of forgiveness and freedom.
This past week I read the story of Palm Sunday from Mark 11. I realized the importance of the town of Bethany in the story of Palm Sunday. Again my name and birth were highlighted in my mind as I read the story of Jesus on Palm Sunday. I was named for the town of Bethany - the town where Jesus visited the friends that He loved dearly. The place where Jesus went to rest.
As I contemplated the story of Jesus in Bethany during Holy Week I was reminded of the women who anointed Jesus showing her deep love for Him. I was reminded that we are to be like the women. We are to show Jesus our love for Him and to tell him regularly that we love Him.
As I continued to follow the story of Holy Week I realized that Jesus was 33 leading up to His death on the cross. I was blown away by the reminded that I was born on Palm Sunday and now I am the same age as Jesus was when He was crucified for me and for the worlds' sins. It gave me new eyes for Jesus' story.
John 13:1-5 is the story of Jesus washing his disciples' feet during the Passover meal. Two things stuck out to me. Verse 13 says, "Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end." This example shows Jesus' love for the people he was with - a love that was to the end. It is a reminder to be present with people wherever you are. Verses 3 and 5 say, "He had come from God and was returning to God...so he got up and...began to wash his disciples feet." Because of Jesus' relationship with God, He was a servant leader to those God put in front of Him. It is a reminder for us to be servants to those we love and those God has put in our lives.
As I continue to follow the events of Holy Week, I hope to continue to look to Jesus as my example. I am the same age as He was when God used Him as our sacrifice. May my life be a living sacrifice for God.
