When Walking isn't just Walking
Most of the time I do my job, take time to rest and do it all again. I like my routines, but once in a while God gives me eyes to see outside of my norm. It's been one of those weeks.
The stuggle to walk
While on a walk one night I ran into a 7th grade boy. I had gotten to know him as a 6th grader and my heart went out to him, he always seemed to be walking alone. This year he has a reason to be walking alone - he had surgery on his leg and is still healing. He wasn't able to come back to school last term because he couldn't get around campus. Now that he's back he is still struggling. He lives on the coast back home, not in the mountains so the terrains is making it very hard for him. When I encountered him on my walk we talked a bit as he struggled to get back to his dorm from dinner.
A few days later I wasn't surprised when he signed up to come to my variety night activity. The tricky part was that he could hardly make it to my house. After bringing him a chair to rest on the way he made it. The trouble came when he had to go home again. He didn't want to make the journey. It was pretty hard to try to motivate him when he was just tired. The hard part for me was that in order to stay here as a student he has to be able to walk around on his own. I was glad God used me to help him for two nights, but I know I'm not there all the other times. I pray for his dorm parents and for his physical therapist and for him, as he struggles through the healing of his leg.
Sharing a meal
In another instance God had me notice one of my choir seniors. At the end of last term she didn't seem like herself. I made it a point to ask her for regular lunches on Fridays every week just to check in on her. I was thankful that she seemed to be back to her old self after the VAC, but God put it on my heart to invite her for dinner last night. It was then she shared with me how hard it's been and her thankfulness for our regular meetings. I was so excited God was using me to encourage her.
Walking for our souls
Similarly, I was very tired yesterday, I knew a trip to the duka would be helpful to get groceries, but I hardly wanted to trek the mountain. When I finally worked up the energy something told me to ask my neighbor to go along. Turns out she had a hard week and needed to talk. It was nice to share my hard stuff too (tour planning). Our schedules are opposites this term so we hardly get to walk together, but I'm so glad God made this one work for both our sakes.
Drama, drama, drama
There are other struggles on campus, like girl drama in the dorms, but I feel like God has allowed me to be a part of seeing this in a way I don't' normally that gives me to the opportunity speak into it when I can. I pray I may be his tool.
Finally, after a fuller week than normal, I was able to chat with my sister for a minute. I really appreciated her insights and it was her words of God's truth that finally got through my head and gave me peace. The coming week may go back to my normal routine, but I am so glad to know God will use me when He needs me.
