Traveling for Christmas Day 3 - December 24th - Christmas Eve
We got up early for our Christmas Eve excursion to the Vatican. I had a nice breakfast and quiet time before getting ready for the day.
We were out the door by 7:40 and after a brisk walk made it to the Vatican by 8:30. Although it was a short 40 minute wait in line, I was a little cold in a dress. However, I was thankful it was only a little cold and by 9:10 we were already inside the Vatican.
It took us a few minutes to orient ourselves, but we quickly found ourselves in an art gallery. Starting in the Renaissance Period I absolutely loved the Biblical portrayals.
One of my early favorites was a painting of St. Francis of Assis. It was interesting to note that the painter included nail wholes in the hands and feet of St. Francis as if he were Jesus.
As we moved into the second room the use of gold in the paintings continued as a striking theme. Though each room we took in the magnificent art work, including some fascinating sketches.
We found many more forms of beautiful art including tapestries and sculptures. We noted art on wood and others painted on stone. Wherever we looked the art was captivating.
As we made our way to the Sistine Chapel each new hall brought new works of intricate art all the way into the contemporary period.
I can't forget our left over pizza lunch in the gardens where I saw my first orange tree and enjoyed the sunshine while we ate.
