Come, Ye Thankful People Come

Deibhidhe (or deibide in Enlighs) is an Irish form of poetry with 4 lines of 7 syllables each.

For this week's devo I plan to ask the kids to write two lines of 7 syllables focusing on what their thankful for.  The reason being the song we are singing, "Come, Ye Thankful People Come," focuses on praising God for his harvest of blessings.  What better way to start than to look at what we are thankful for.

Before we get to the words of the song, here are a few interesting facts that will be helpful to know...

Harvest home is the gathering in or bringing home of the final part of the year's harvest.  It is also a festival held at the time of the harvest.  Did you know it's even a song, so when the words talk about raising the song of harvest home, it's a real thing.

The word "ere" means "before in time," so the sentence below could read, "All is safely gathered in, before in time the winter storms begin.

The word "yield" refers to the full about brought in from the harvest.

The words of the song read as follows:

Come, ye thankful people come
Raise the song of harvest home
All is safely gathered in
Ere the winter storms begin

God our Maker doth provide
For our wants to be supplied
Come to God's own temple come
Raise the song of harvest home

All the blessings of the field
All the stores the gardens yield.
All the fruit in full supply
Ripened beneath the summer sky
All that liberal autumn pours
From her bounteous stores

These to Thee our God we owe
Source from whom all blessings flow
And for these our souls shall raise
Grateful vows and solemn praise

So with grateful vows and praise now
Come then thankful people come
Raise the song of harvest home
Come to His temple come
Raise the song of harvest home.

We will be singing parts of this song with the congregation during our concert.  Since you are not with us, my question to you is...What are you thankful for?
