A day in the week
I realized I hadn't done a "day in the life" since being here at RVA. It may not be the most interesting of posts, since a school day is something I also did in the States, but it's more for me as I remember what life is like here.
Thursday is my busies day:
My first class starts at 9:25. Music 7, which is made up of 7th graders, hence the 7 in the title, starts with school announcements. One of the students reads the verse of the day and we finish the announcements with who has mail to pick up and who has birthdays. Most days of music theory end in the practice rooms as I listen to the students play whatever concept we are working, ie. intervals, triads, ect.
Following Music 7 is chapel. On Fridays we head to the flag pole and grassy area in front of the first building on campus and the offices - Kiambogo. One of the musical groups leads us in the Kenyan National Anthem which we sing in Swahili first and then in English. It is a requirement that all schools in Kenya sing the National Anthem on Fridays.
Each day following chapel is chi time, which for the staff means Staff Prayer. We gather in the staff room to prayer for family, friends, church members and other missionaries. Announcements follow.
We are dismissed around 11:00 and then I head over to Titchie (elementary) to set up for my afternoon classes. Once the students folders are set out on their chairs my next stop is the Jr. High building where I have 5th period study hall with the Jr. Highers who aren't in band.
Once study hall is finished I have about a half hour for lunch so I eat in the Cafo rather than spend 15 minutes walking home and over to Titchie. I usually eat with the 5/6th grade girls, but often head over to eat with the 7th grade girls once the Titchies leave for recess. Tuesdays is always hamburgers and fries, which aren't my favorite they way they make them so I usually have a cheese sandwich or a BTL when they have bacon.
On my way over to Titchie I grab a cup of coffee from the Titchie staff room. The principle is Scottish so he has asked the custodial staff to make it nice and dark. Thursdays I have 5th grade music for a half hour followed buy 6th grade music for 30 minutes. Tuesdays and Friday are 1/2nd and then 3/4th.
Following Titchie Musical I have a break for 45 minutes when I do grading, printing and emails. My final class of the day is Choir during 7th period. Some days I have piano or voice lessons after school or in the evenings. On Thursday, however, I have dorm cover from 6:30-9:00, which means I head home for a few hours of quiet and dinner.
Dorm cover consists of study hall where I listen to the verses of spelling words the girls have memorized and then sign assignment notebooks. At 7:45 we have a snack that I have brought and then listen to Odyssey. At 8:45 the girls brush their teeth and then have 15 minutes of quiet time reading their Bibles. By 9:00 I walk home and get ready for bed myself before a new day.
