11 Things You Didn't Know About RVA
1. Rift Valley Academy was founded by Charles Hurlbert. Originally, Hurlbert looked at an area in Nakuru for the school, however he found out that the property was already spoken for. As he headed home to regroup he stumbled across the land in Kijabi were the school now sits. It turns out that the natural bore hole for water was exactly what was need for a school of our size, not to mention that the altitude meant the that residents at RVA don't have to worry about malaria infected miskito. God sure knew what He was doing.
2. RVA is a year-round school. We operate on 3 month terms with a month - 6 weeks off in-between each term allowing the students to spend time with their families after 3 months away. This means that the school year doesn't get done until the middle of July unlike American schools.
2. Although RVA is an African Inland Mission School, it also has students and staff from 74 different mission organizations.
3. The students of RVA originate from 30 different counties around the world including Korea and Australia.
4. RVA students come from 287 families working around Africa including with a small population of Kenyan national students and expats.
5. RVA employs around 240 national staff workers for everything from maintenance, cooking staff, laundry, custodial, and indoor workers.
6. Along with European Football, Volleyball and Basketball the RVA students also play competitive Field hockey and Rugby throughout the year.
7. Dorms on campus are named for Kenyan animals with Swahili names like Twiga (Giraffe), Chui (Leopard), Tembo (Elephant), and Nyati (Buffalo).
8. The RVA compound sits on 90 acres at over 7,000 ft above sea level overlooking the Great Rift Valley.
9. The power goes on and off throughout Kenya. Sometimes it will be out for a few minutes, other times everything will be dead for hours. RVA has a large generator that kicks in on such occasions. You know the power is out when you wake up to the whirring of the generator. In other cases, you will be online and the power will click of and then come back on when the generator kicks in only have it happen again moments later in reverse.
10. Since RVA is 1.5hrs from the city of Nairobi many staff members employ even more national staff to deliver meet, cheese, and milk each week. This is especially helpful as many adults are unable to leave campus regularly as they look after the students during the week and on the weekends.
11. President Teddy Roosevelt, laid the foundation stone for the start of RVA in 1906.
