Kitengela
Another day trip with some of the ladies from campus took us to Kitengela Hot Glass Studio. I had watched a documentary on glass blowing once before, but it was fascinating to see the glass made in person.
Any guessed on what this will become?
Using wet old newspaper they shape the glass
It cools quickly so they put it back in the fire at different stages
They add a piece which will be removed from the base at the end and then cut off the top.
The fire is heated to 1000 degrees
In the end the top opens up to what looks like a plate
Waves are added to create a serving dish
The glass is so hot that it sets fire to dry paper
They make all sorts of dishwear
Here they are making a goblet
I also got to watch as they whole team made a unique glass.
It was fascinating to watch all the different steps
They also make glass into other things like the beads above for the decor below
Another wonderful learning experience.
