Sha uku

Tonight's dinner was an African style Sha uku from the islands of Africa.

We all took our shoes off to go in to dinner.

The men went in first and sat in small circles.

Once the men were served the women found their places.

Not only is there no silverware, but we can only use our right hands.

Out of the same bowls we ate rice, cabbage cooked in coconut milk, a cumin based dish with onions and tomatoes,  a root drink we shared, and fried kassava root with a spicy dipping sauce.

It was a lot of fun to try to shovel food into our mouths.  I have to say the ladies had less food on their mats than the men did.
