Missional Peace

The word peace takes many forms, one of them is found in words like order and harmony. Within this kind of peace, we also see unity and neutrality. I appreciate these synonyms because they point to a peace that can exist in community—whether working, collaborating, or simply being with others. This form of peace doesn’t leave me isolated; instead, it offers calm even in the midst of a crowd.

It’s natural to long for the first form of peace—especially for an introvert like me—but words like agreement and reconciliation remind me that peace is also possible in a relationship. Thankfully, peace is more than solitude, because life is rarely lived alone. It’s reassuring to know that we can experience peace through harmony, much like two voices blending together in perfect song.

What place or feeling comes to mind when you reflect on synonyms of peace like order, unity, and agreement?

For me, I think of missionaries Stan Dale and his wife, who lived deep in the jungle among a tribe known for killing and even eating those they disliked (a story told in Lords of the Earth by Don Richardson). As newcomers to the tribe, the missionaries once hid in their home during a raid, praying for wisdom. In that moment, God brought to mind Romans 12:18, "If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."

They realized their calling as Christians and missionaries was not to defend themselves but to embody peace.  It is my desire to choose this kind of peace in difficult situations and relationships.
