Led forth in Peace

Isaiah 55:8-13

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.

For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it bud and sprout, and providing seed to sow and food to eat, so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper where I send it.

You will indeed go out with joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Instead of the thornbush, the cypress will grow, and instead of the brier, the myrtle will spring up; this will make a name for the LORD, an everlasting sign, never to be destroyed.”

Sunsets are always breathtaking, and the ones in Kijabe, Kenya, were particularly soul-cleansing—so much so that I started going out at twilight just to clear my mind of any negative thoughts the day had brought. Sometimes I would sit somewhere on campus and simply take it in; other times, I would walk around, trying to find the best view of the changing sky. On occasion, I would try to capture the mountains and the setting sun in a picture, though the photo never did justice to God’s painting. Still, I enjoyed the scene before me; it was always an opportunity to refresh my mind before heading to bed in hopes of sleeping peacefully before a new day.

I can’t help but remember these encouraging times when I read the words of the Psalmist, and my soul is challenged to continue the practice of finding peace by taking in God’s scenery—breathing in His sovereignty and resting in His plans.

On a side note, Do you know the song that goes with this verse?  If so, I hope you're singing along with me...
