Palm Sunday
Palm Sunday is my favorite Sunday all year. I love when the children walk through the service waiving palm branches while we all sing. It's a big party. I enjoyed reading the different accounts of The Triumphal Entry too. It was odd stopping after just the first part of the story and not reading through to Easter Sunday, but there was a sense of anticipation that I really enjoyed.
Listening to music, especially from operas or ballets, I always ask the students where they think the song fits in the story, before I tel them. It's amazing how full of emotion a piece can be. Many of the pieces anticipate what's happening next in the story even as they celebrate what is happening at that moment. I couldn't help but think of music as I anticipate the rest of "Holy Week."
As a result I began wishing people "Happy Holy Week," but that just seemed odd. There is nothing happy about preparing for death. I can understand saying "Happy Easter" with the celebration of life, but as I read the story of The Triumphal Entry even Jesus wept as he entered the city knowing what was about to happen and that the people wouldn't get it. Even though "Holy Week" leaves us feeling somber there is hope and redemption to look forward to, and that's a "Happy" felling to have.
